I have to begin with how much I love every Andrea Johnston novel. I haven’t read a mediocre novel from her. I love everyone of them. I will admit this is not one of my favorites (Tequila and Tailgates will always be the top–Ashton is wickedly hilarious. If you haven’t read it–Do it!). I love how she intertwines the characters from her previous series with this one. Although, if you haven’t read the series, you can still fully understand these characters since they were minor characters in the series. The reader didn’t get a lot about Beth during her time at Country Road–although we do know who her hook-up is and why he wanted a long term relationship with her and not Beth. But Mercy tells us her version later in the book too. No one is in the dark about her previous life.
Mercy Elizabeth Warner is still trying to find her place in this world after working for Taylor at Country Road–a bar in Lexington, Kentucky. Beth as she went by in Lexington decided it was time for a change. It had nothing to do with the fact that her casual hook up decided he wanted a long term relationship–with someone else. She heads back to Texas to visit her momma for two weeks before heading for the bright lights of Austin. She grew up in a small town and hates everything about it. She loves everything about big city life. Until her car breaks down a few miles from a small town over two hours from Austin, luck is on her side. Sorda of. Her beloved Gerty can be fixed, but it will take months to get the parts. The luck is meeting Vera, the owner of The Mess Hall, a local diner in Fayhill. Vera insists that Mercy stays with her since Mercy helped Vera out. Vera’s love of Margaritas and twinkling vampires bonds the two women.
From the moment Shane Abbott laid eyes on Mercy, he knew that she was something special. Mercy says that Fayhill is only a temporary stop but she’s getting to know everyone so much that he wonders if she really will leave when her beloved car is fixed. He prays that she won’t. He swoons and romances her to ensure that she doesn’t want to leave him or this town. Even his ex breezing back into town isn’t deterring him from keeping Mercy close even after her car is fixed.
Is he willing to leave his small town life for the big city? Is Mercy willing to leave her big city dreams for a gorgeous dimpled cowboy? Will they find a way to be together even though she loves the big city and he loves small town life?
